Tongyang expands CarbonCure concrete in South Korea and ties sales to carbon removal credits
biz.chosun.comTongyang, a South Korean KOSPI-listed company, is scaling up its use of CarbonCure technology for ready-mixed concrete. CarbonCure injects liquefied CO2 during production, where it mineralizes into calcium carbonate and stays permanently inside the concrete. This process also boosts concrete strength by 5 to 10 percent and cuts cement use by 3 to 5 percent, lowering both costs and emissions. Tongyang has produced 55,000 cubic meters of CarbonCure concrete so far, supplying major construction sites in Gyeonggi and Incheon. The company now plans to link these sales to carbon removal credits, which trade at much higher prices than standard reduction credits. Top-tier removal credits from methods like direct air capture can sell for over $1,000 per ton. By tying concrete sales to carbon credit revenue, Tongyang aims to generate additional income while preparing for tighter global carbon neutrality regulations. The move reflects a growing trend where industrial materials producers use embedded carbon removal to create new revenue streams.
