Tongass Rainforest Report: Carbon Storage, Wildfire Shield, and the Roadless Rule
aksportingjournal.comA new report from the Alaska Sustainable Fisheries Trust looks at the economic and ecological value of the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska. The SeaBank Natural Capital Report highlights how the region's rainy climate makes it a natural buffer against large wildfires, while its old-growth trees store an estimated 2.7 billion metric tons of carbon. That carbon represents about 20% of all carbon held by the U.S. National Forest System. The Tongass also contains 30% of the world's remaining old-growth temperate rainforest. The report argues that logging, which the U.S. Forest Service is considering under a revised management plan, would dry out the forest and create flammable slash, increasing fire risk. Commercial fishing and tourism add $1.8 billion per year to the local economy, and every dollar of resident fishery earnings generates $1.54 in community revenue.
