Researchers from Tohoku University and Nitto Boseki have discovered that adjusting the counter anion size in Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) significantly increases carbon dioxide adsorption. By purifying the materials to remove inorganic salt impurities, the team achieved a CO2 capture capacity seven times higher than the base material. This breakthrough provides a new design framework for creating more efficient gas separation membranes and carbon recovery devices. The findings could lead to better industrial emissions capture and more effective atmospheric CO2 removal technologies.
