TNB's RM43b grid upgrade and Budget 2027: what it means for Malaysia's power grid, data centres and renewables
themalaysianreserve.comMalaysia's national utility TNB has committed RM43 billion from 2025 to 2027 to upgrade the country's electricity grid, with RM15 billion coming through the Budget 2027 allocation. The money is aimed at handling rising electricity demand from data centres and the digital economy, while also supporting Malaysia's net zero goal by 2050. The utility plans to speed up grid connections for data centres through its Green Lane Pathway, offer renewable power via CRESS and the Green Electricity Tariff, and expand solar, battery storage, and hydro life extension projects. It is also backing Malaysia's target of 70% renewable capacity by 2050. For households, the electricity bill protection threshold moves up to 800 kWh per month until the end of 2026, covering an estimated 90% of domestic users. TNB says the broader investment is needed to keep supply reliable as the economy grows, though the real test is whether the new capacity is actually renewable and not just more gas.
