A new perspective in Communications Earth & Environment challenges the binary view that all tillage is harmful to the climate. The research suggests that while no-till is often promoted for carbon sequestration, strategic tillage can be essential for weed and pest management in pesticide-free farming systems. Findings indicate that carbon inputs, rather than the absence of tillage, are the primary drivers of soil organic carbon stocks. Furthermore, the study warns that nitrous oxide emissions in some no-till systems can offset the carbon gains, arguing for a systems-based approach to greenhouse gas accounting in agriculture.
