Tiger Brands has switched on solar power at seven of its manufacturing sites across South Africa, covering locations in the Free State, Gauteng, North West, and KwaZulu-Natal. The most recent installation is a 1.9 MWh solar system at its Culinary facility in Boksburg, funded through a power purchase agreement with Solar Africa. The company aims to source 31% of its electricity from renewables by 2030 and cut carbon emissions by 30% over the same period. Beyond on-site solar, Tiger Brands signed a wheeling agreement with Apollo Africa to deliver renewable electricity via the national grid to its Gauteng factories starting in 2028. Under that deal, sites supplied through the Ekurhuleni Municipality should get about 60% of their power from renewables. The company also has a broader set of 2030 environmental targets including zero waste to landfill, lower water and energy intensity, and more recyclable packaging.

Good to see a major food manufacturer putting solar PPAs to work in South Africa. The 1.9 MWh at Boksburg is modest but the wheeling deal for 2028 is the more interesting piece. Municipal grid access is often the bottleneck there.

Wheeling through Ekurhuleni is the part I want to see executed. Municipalities have been slow to allow third-party wheeling. If Tiger Brands actually gets 60% of supply that way by 2028 it would be a real signal for industrial PPAs in SA.

Agreed on the baseline gap. Also worth noting the 31% renewable electricity target. That is a specific procurement goal, not a vague pledge. If they hit it, it would meaningfully reduce their exposure to Eskom coal power.

They mention site-specific energy assessments and better metering. That is often more impactful than the solar itself in industrial settings. Fixing steam leaks and motor efficiency can cut load faster than waiting for new panels.
