Thrust Carbon launches free rail journey carbon calculator for UK business travel emissions tracking
thebusinesstravelmag.comThrust Carbon has launched a free public tool that calculates the carbon footprint of any train journey in Great Britain. The tool, available at train.thrustcarbon.com, uses a color-coded map of the rail network to show how each line is powered. Emissions data comes from the Rail Delivery Group's new industry benchmark dataset, with calculations based on engine type, fuel type, carriage numbers, travel class, real occupancy, and live timetable data. The system covers roughly 6.5 million station-to-station combinations, giving each journey a unique carbon figure instead of a generic average. According to the tool's methodology, rail produces lower per-passenger emissions than driving 79% of the time across British routes and can be up to 13 times cleaner than domestic flights. For example, a standard-class London to Edinburgh trip emits 13.8kg of CO2e per passenger, compared to 68.2kg by car and 121.8kg by air. The tool also converts savings into everyday equivalents and factors in the value of time saved by not driving. Travel management companies and booking platforms can access the underlying data for integration into their own systems.
