Constellation Energy is restarting Three Mile Island Unit 1, now called the Crane Clean Energy Center, to meet the massive electricity demands of AI data centers. Through a 20 year power purchase agreement with Microsoft and a 1 billion dollar federal loan, the plant will provide 835 MW of carbon-free baseload power to the PJM Interconnection region. This move signals a broader trend of tech giants securing reliable, zero-emissions energy to reach carbon-negative goals. The project highlights the role of existing nuclear assets in stabilizing the grid as coal and gas plants retire and AI power consumption grows.
