Thiol-Modified Biochar Locks Mercury in Soil Even After Repeated Heatwave Weathering Cycles
miragenews.comResearchers at Shenyang Agricultural University tested thiol-modified biochar (TMB) on mercury-contaminated soil exposed to 30 dry and wet cycles that mimic heatwave-driven weathering. TMB cut leachable mercury by 82.3% versus 7.1% in untreated soil and reduced bioavailable mercury by shifting it into more stable mineral-bound forms. The material also suppressed methylmercury accumulation and improved soil microbial diversity. TMB works by promoting mineral weathering that increases soil pH and creates stronger binding sites for mercury. It remained effective even after simulated acid rain leaching, cutting mercury release by 87.4% after 30 cycles. This makes TMB a practical option for remediating contaminated sites in regions facing more frequent heatwaves and acid rain.
