Wetlands, particularly peatlands and mangroves, act as some of the most efficient carbon sinks on earth. Peatlands cover only 3% of global land but store twice as much carbon as all the world's forests combined, making their preservation essential for meeting global climate targets. Beyond carbon storage, these ecosystems provide critical infrastructure services, including flood mitigation and water filtration. With the Global Wetland Outlook 2025 valuing these services at $39 trillion annually, restoring degraded wetlands is a high-impact strategy for both biodiversity and atmospheric decarbonization.
