Most sustainability reports focus on operational emissions, but sudden infrastructure loss can wipe out years of progress. A case study of a car park fire at Luton Airport shows that the carbon cost of rebuilding can outweigh several years of Scope 1 and 2 emissions. This highlights a critical flaw in current GHG accounting where exceptional events are treated as footnotes. True environmental resilience requires protecting existing assets to avoid the massive embodied carbon hit associated with demolition and reconstruction.
