Thailand's $750 Million Nature Bond Ties Public Borrowing to Emissions and Biodiversity Targets
devdiscourse.comThailand issued a 25 billion baht sustainability-linked bond, roughly $750 million, with a 15-year maturity. It is the first sovereign bond in Asia and the Pacific to include a nature-related indicator. The bond ties borrowing costs to two targets: cutting net greenhouse gas emissions to below 152 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent by 2035, and protecting at least 30% of terrestrial and inland water areas by 2030. Demand reached 2.8 times the planned amount, so Thailand upsized the deal from 15 billion to 25 billion baht. The Asian Development Bank supported the bond framework through its GSS+ Finance Initiative. Investors get a measurable view of Thailand's climate and biodiversity progress, and the deal gives other governments a template for linking public finance to conservation and decarbonization.
