Thailand cuts 3.8 million tonnes CO2 with low-carbon cement, surpassing NDC targets

Thailand has reduced over 3.8 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent since 2019 by switching to low-carbon hydraulic cement in construction. The cement industry replaced high-clinker content with alternatives, cutting the most carbon-intensive part of production while keeping structural performance. This move puts Thailand ahead of its NDC Roadmap timeline and shows how industrial policy can deliver measurable emissions cuts. The achievement was announced at the TCMA at 20 event, where 34 partners across government, industry, and academia were recognized. The Thai Cement Manufacturers Association says the results came from coordinated R&D, updated standards, and market adoption. The country is now pushing toward its Net Zero 2050 goal with this model of multi-stakeholder collaboration. For carbon markets and climate policy watchers, this is a concrete example of industrial decarbonization at scale. The question is whether other hard-to-abate sectors in Southeast Asia can replicate this approach with similar speed and verification.
