Thailand and World Bank launch $200M low-carbon cities project for rooftop solar, efficiency, and carbon credit trading
tradersunion.comThailand and the World Bank unveiled a $200 million Low Carbon Cities and Carbon Market Development Project at the IMF-World Bank meetings in Bangkok. It is designed to support 180 MW of renewable energy, mostly rooftop solar on public buildings and industrial estates, and save about 448 million kWh per year, roughly the electricity use of 100,000 Bangkok households. The model pools smaller projects into larger packages, standardizes financing, and brings in private energy service companies to make clean energy investment more bankable. The second pillar is a carbon credit market. Krungthai Bank will aggregate verified credits, while the Stock Exchange of Thailand will run transparent auctions. Early corporate demand includes Thai Airways, Grab, ACEIS Electric, and DriverAI. The World Bank is also providing $2.4 million through its Partnership for Market Implementation to help develop carbon pricing rules. In Rayong, PTT's I-SPARK initiative could attract over $5 billion in investment by 2035, though that figure remains an estimate and is subject to further assessment.
