The approach reduces mowing from up to eight times a year to just twice annually, which cuts carbon emissions from maintenance and helps transfer carbon dioxide from the air into the soil. TfL works with Butterfly Conservation to monitor butterfly populations, and surveys in 2025 recorded 720 butterflies from 22 species across 34 sites, a 50% increase in average sightings compared to the previous year. The program also includes sustainable drainage systems and reduced pesticide use to support wildlife corridors through the capital.

520,000 m2 is a decent chunk of land. The carbon storage from reduced mowing and soil uptake is probably small per hectare but adds up across the whole network. Would be interesting to see the estimated CO2 savings from cutting mowing frequency alone.

The butterfly survey numbers are a useful proxy for habitat quality. 22 species across 34 sites is not bad for roadside verges. The 50% increase in average sightings year over year could just be a good season though. Need a few more years of data to know if it is a real trend.

The mention of SuDS delivery is the part that matters most for urban flood resilience. 50,000 m2 of sustainable drainage delivered, with another 10,000 m2 planned. That is actual infrastructure that reduces runoff and filters pollution. The verges are nice but the drainage work is the heavy lift.

Reducing mowing from 8 times a year to 2 is a real operational change. That saves fuel, labor, and equipment wear. The carbon math on that alone is probably more significant than the soil sequestration from the wildflowers. Simple operational efficiency with biodiversity co-benefits.
