Textile dyeing process re-engineering cuts steam, water, and chemical use in cotton fabric production
textiletoday.com.bdA study from HAMS Garments Ltd. and BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology shows how re-engineering the dyeing process for 100% cotton single jersey fabric can cut steam consumption by up to 41.6% in light shades and 21.9% in medium shades. The new process uses multifunctional chemical substitutes to lower pretreatment temperature from 105C to 80C, reduce soda ash usage by 90%, and eliminate separate soaping agents. Water use dropped 11.6% for light shades and batch time fell by up to 11.8%. Industrial trials on a 300 kg dyeing machine maintained fabric quality with improved bursting strength and comparable color fastness. The authors project annual savings of about Tk 11.71 million and a carbon footprint reduction of 1.11 million kg CO2 for a 30 ton per day facility. The process aligns with UN SDGs 6, 7, 12, and 13. This is a practical example of low-temperature, low-chemical dyeing that could be scaled across textile mills looking to cut energy and water use without sacrificing output quality.
