Texas A&M researchers develop new graphene oxide production method from methane using plasma, yielding hydrogen as a byproduct

The process, described in Nature Communications, converts natural gas into high-purity graphene oxide while generating hydrogen as a byproduct. The team says the approach could lower costs and reduce reliance on mined graphite, much of which is imported. Graphene oxide is used in lithium-ion batteries, coatings, and composites. The method emerged from a hydrogen production project. Instead of treating carbon as waste, the plasma reactor builds graphene oxide from methane molecules. The researchers say the material is comparable to commercial graphene oxide but avoids the harsh chemicals used in conventional graphite processing. The work was supported by LTEOIL and published in Nature Communications. The team sees potential for domestic supply chains for advanced carbon nanomaterials and a way to route carbon from natural gas into solid products rather than emissions.
