Tesco is calling on the UK food industry to scale up the use of low carbon fertilisers on farms. The retailer says these alternatives can reduce carbon emissions by 50% without hurting crop yields, based on trials at its Lincolnshire concept farm. Tesco UK CEO Ashwin Prasad made the case at London Tech Week, arguing that low carbon fertilisers could also help farmers avoid price shocks from global supply chain disruptions. Tesco's own trial with potato supplier Branston produced 500 tonnes of potatoes with half the usual carbon footprint. But the company notes that many farmers still face barriers like limited supply and difficulty funding trials. Tesco is relaunching its Agri-tech Challenge to find practical solutions that can move these technologies from small trials to mainstream use on British farms.
