Terraton Issues First Biochar Credits, Signs Offtakes With Climeworks And Climate Impact Partners
carbonherald.comTerraton, an agribusiness biochar platform, issued its first carbon removal credits through registry Isometric for the EcoFix Kenya facility in Nanyuki. The site converts waste nut shells into biochar. Buyers have signed purchase agreements for up to 97,240 metric tons of carbon removal, including Climeworks Solutions, Climate Impact Partners, Carbonfuture, and Terraset. Terraton says the EcoFix project took 14 months from investment decision to credit issuance, and the company is aiming to cut that to 10 months using standardized designs and automated data reporting. A second Kenyan site is being commissioned with One Acre Fund's Tupande, and the company has 28 MOUs plus 30 more sites under evaluation. HSBC Ventures provided $1.5 million in debt financing, and Terraton is structuring a $25 million pooled facility to finance around 20 biochar sites as one portfolio.
