Terraton Issues First Biochar Carbon Credits, Signs Offtakes With Climeworks, Coca-Cola, and Climate Impact Partners
carbonherald.comTerraton has issued its first certified biochar carbon removal credits through registry Isometric for its EcoFix facility in Nanyuki, Kenya. The facility converts waste nut shells into biochar, and the company has signed purchase agreements for up to 97,240 metric tons of CO2 removal with buyers including Climeworks, Climate Impact Partners, Carbonfuture, Terraset, and Coca-Cola. Most of that volume is reserved rather than committed, so the firm number is smaller than the headline. Terraton says standardized designs and automated data collection let it cut project timelines from 14 months to 10 months, with a second Kenyan site being commissioned and more than 50 sites in the pipeline. HSBC Ventures provided $1.5 million in debt financing, and the company is working on a $25 million pooled facility to fund around 20 biochar plants. The model is worth following because it ties carbon removal to agricultural waste without requiring a separate energy project.
