TerraSpark has secured up to $18.5 million in DOE funding for the TerraSpark Energy Campus, a 1.6 GW coal-fired power plant in Grant County, West Virginia, that will integrate advanced carbon capture technology. The project uses Mantel Capture's molten borate system, which claims to capture up to 98% of CO2 emissions while cutting energy use for capture by over 97%. The campus will also host a training and innovation center focused on rare earth extraction and waste-to-value research. The funding covers front-end engineering, permitting, and early technical studies. The project team includes Sargent & Lundy, Babcock & Wilcox, and Advanced Resources International. Developers expect the site to create nearly 500 permanent jobs plus construction positions. The DOE backing signals continued federal support for carbon capture on coal generation, though the technology's commercial viability at scale remains unproven.
