TerraPower has started construction on Kemmerer Unit 1, the first utility-scale advanced nuclear power plant in the U.S. Located in Wyoming at a retiring coal site, the plant uses a sodium fast reactor combined with a molten salt energy storage system to provide flexible, carbon-free power to the grid. The Natrium system is designed to support grids with high levels of variable renewables by offering a baseload of 345 MW with the ability to boost output to 500 MW during peak demand. The project is being developed through the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program and is expected to be completed by 2030.
