Terradot and Google Pair Methane Reduction and Carbon Removal in Brazil's Largest ERW Project
bdtonline.comTerradot and Google announced a megaton-scale project in Southern Brazil that combines methane avoidance in rice paddies with enhanced rock weathering for durable carbon removal. Google will purchase 1 million tonnes of methane impact by 2030 and 1 million tonnes of carbon removal by 2040, making it the company's largest carbon removal purchase to date. The project will cover over 200,000 hectares of rice fields in Rio Grande do Sul, using alternate wetting and drying to cut methane and spreading crushed volcanic rock to capture CO2. Farmers also benefit from lower water use and improved soil health. This is the first project to combine these two approaches at scale, and it may set a template for pairing near-term climate action with long-term removal. Terradot is targeting 1 million tonnes of CO2 removal annually by 2035. The deal includes an R&D grant to Stanford to strengthen the science behind the methane mitigation approach, and findings will be shared publicly.
