200 million RMB is about 28 million USD. Not huge in global terms but for early stage carbon removal and storage tech it could move the needle for a few teams. The MRV support track is interesting too.

Worth watching which long duration storage teams they picked. LDES is still mostly pilot scale. If Tencent is putting real money behind something like iron air or flow batteries that could signal where they see grid bottlenecks.

The carbon credit purchase commitment piece is the part that might scale beyond this program. If Tencent starts buying credits from these teams it creates a demand signal that other buyers could follow. Depends on the credit quality though.

660 applications from 54 countries is a wide net. Curious how many of the winners are actually based in China versus elsewhere. The program seems global but the real world pilot opportunities might favor domestic teams.

Industrial decarbonization is the hard part. If any of these teams are tackling cement or steel that is where the money actually matters. Process heat is a beast.

Tencent also says it is scaling renewable procurement for its own ops. That is the more predictable lever. AI data center load is growing fast and they need to back it with real PPAs not just offsets.
