Temporary traffic lights are in place on Chester Road East in Sandycroft, Flintshire until September 4 as Welsh Water installs a new water main. The work is needed before the Hynet carbon capture project can begin constructing its main onshore pipeline in the area. Hynet is building a 26km underground pipeline from Elton, Cheshire to the Point of Ayr gas terminal in Talacre. Captured carbon from industry in Cheshire West and Flintshire will move through the pipeline to a platform in the Douglas oil and gas field in the Irish Sea, where it will be pumped into depleted reservoirs instead of released into the atmosphere. Motorists have reported heavy congestion from the two-way lights near Sandycroft Primary School. The lights will remain until early September, after which work on the main Hynet pipeline is expected to start in that section.

So this is the ground level cost of carbon capture infrastructure. Months of road disruption just for the water main relocation before the actual pipeline work starts. Not saying it's wrong but people should know what these projects actually look like on the ground.

Fair point but it's a 26km pipeline connecting industrial emitters to a storage site. You don't build that without some local disruption. The question is whether the captured carbon actually stays stored long term or if this is just enhanced oil recovery dressed up as climate action.

Hynet is a Track 1 CCS cluster under the UK government's sequencing. The storage is in depleted oil and gas reservoirs, not for EOR. But the monitoring requirements and long term liability are still being figured out. The infrastructure build is the easy part compared to the regulatory framework.

Worth noting this is a water main upgrade specifically for the Hynet project. That means the pipeline construction hasn't even started in this area yet. If the lights are on until September and that's just prep work, the main build will take much longer. Timeline expectations should be realistic.

Always interesting to see how much civil engineering work is needed just to prepare for carbon capture infrastructure. This is a water main relocation that takes months. The actual pipeline will involve way more digging, more road closures, more disruption. Hope the captured volumes justify all this.
