Teesside Gas Power Plant: 742MW CCGT with Integrated Carbon Capture, $5bn Construction
constructionreviewonline.comThe Teesside gas power plant in northeast England is set to become the world's first commercial-scale gas-fired power station with integrated carbon capture. The 742MW combined-cycle facility, developed by Net Zero Teesside Power Limited (bp and Equinor), uses a GE Vernova 9HA.02 turbine and Shell's CANSOLV technology to capture up to 2 million tonnes of CO2 annually. Construction started in 2025 with Balfour Beatty as the main civil and mechanical contractor, and the project targets commercial operation in 2028. The $5 billion combined construction value covers both the power plant and the Northern Endurance Partnership's CO2 transport and storage infrastructure, which will inject captured carbon beneath the North Sea. The plant is part of the wider East Coast Cluster, designed to serve multiple industrial emitters. With over 3,000 construction jobs and 1,000 operational roles, this project is a major test case for decarbonizing gas power at scale, though questions remain about cost, capture efficiency, and how it compares to renewables and storage alternatives.
