Northern Gas Networks is proposing a £1.2 billion hydrogen pipeline network across Teesside and the Humber, aiming to supply low-carbon hydrogen to heavy industries like steel, chemicals, and glass manufacturing. The 39-mile Teesside route and 68-mile Humber route would connect hydrogen production and storage to industrial users that cannot easily electrify their high-temperature processes. The project could create up to 1,200 jobs and is expected to go through the Development Consent Order process, with construction starting in the 2030s. Local leaders and the Tees Valley Mayor have backed the plan as a way to safeguard industrial jobs while cutting carbon emissions. Community feedback will be sought in the coming months before detailed designs are finalized.

39 miles on Teesside side seems short but connecting Newton Aycliffe to Skinningrove covers a lot of industrial sites. The real question is who pays for the storage and compression along the route.

1,200 jobs across two regions sounds modest for a 1.2bn project. Most of that value is probably in construction, not permanent operations. Would like to see the breakdown.

Keith Owen from NGN says hydrogen can replace natural gas for high heat without emissions. That's true if the hydrogen is produced cleanly. No mention of the source yet.
