Tata Steel UK Port Talbot EAF Project Faces 6-8 Month Delay Due to National Grid Power Connection Issues

The project, which includes the UK's largest electric arc furnace with a 3.2 million tonne capacity, is central to the company's plan to cut site-level CO2 emissions by 90%, or about 5 million tonnes annually. The UK government is providing 500 million pounds in support for the transition from blast furnace to electric arc furnace steelmaking. Tata Steel CFO Koushik Chatterjee confirmed that National Grid formally alerted the company to delays in the connectivity project. The company is working with the UK government, the Electricity System Operator, and National Grid to find ways to reduce the delay, but some postponement is now unavoidable. Originally, the EAF was expected to begin operations by late 2027 or early 2028. The delay highlights a growing bottleneck for industrial decarbonization projects that depend on timely grid infrastructure upgrades. Major demolition at the Port Talbot site is complete, and equipment fabrication continues. However, the power connection delay means the new furnace cannot be commissioned on schedule. This situation underscores the critical role of grid readiness in meeting national climate targets and industrial transition timelines. The outcome of Tata Steel's negotiations with grid operators will be closely watched by other heavy industries planning similar electrification projects.
