Tata Steel UK low-carbon EAF project delayed 6-8 months due to grid power supply constraints
timesnownews.comTata Steel has announced that its 1.25 billion pound low-carbon electric arc furnace project at Port Talbot, UK, will be delayed by six to eight months because of power supply constraints. National Grid formally notified the company that its connectivity project is behind schedule. The EAF, which has 500 million pounds in UK government support, is designed to replace a shuttered blast furnace and cut site-level CO2 emissions by 90 percent, or about 5 million tonnes per year. Demolition work at the site is complete and equipment fabrication continues, but the company cannot begin operations without higher-power electricity access. The project was originally expected to start in late 2027 or early 2028. Tata Steel reported that its UK revenues were 1,978 million pounds and its EBITDA loss nearly halved to 217 million pounds, though the delay adds execution risk to one of the country's largest industrial decarbonization efforts.
