Tata Steel has announced a 6 to 8 month delay in its 1.25 billion pound green steel project at Port Talbot, UK. The delay is caused by National Grid's inability to provide high-voltage electricity connections on the original schedule. The project aims to replace blast furnaces with a 3.2 million tonne electric arc furnace, cutting site-level CO2 emissions by 90 percent or 5 million tonnes annually. The UK government is providing 500 million pounds in support. The company reports that demolition work is complete and equipment fabrication continues, but the power connection is the critical bottleneck. Tata Steel is working with National Grid, the Electricity System Operator, and the UK government to reduce the delay if possible. The project was originally expected to begin operations in late 2027 or early 2028.
