Tata Steel Launches India's First Coke Oven Gas Injection at Meramandali to Cut Steel Emissions
constructionworld.inTata Steel has commissioned India's first coke oven gas (COG) injection project at its Meramandali plant in Odisha. The system cleans and injects hydrogen-rich COG into the blast furnace through tuyeres, partially replacing metallurgical coke and lowering carbon intensity. It enables a three-fuel operating model using internal process gas, improving flexibility while cutting emissions without a full process overhaul. This is a practical retrofit for existing blast furnaces, relevant to steel decarbonization in India. Developed with Paul Wurth-SMS and Kobelco, the project supports Tata Steel's broader decarbonization program. The company reported FY26 CO2 intensity of 2.22 tonnes per tonne of crude steel and R&D spend of Rs. 14.56 billion. While the exact emission reduction percentage isn't disclosed, this step demonstrates how incremental gas injection can reduce reliance on fossil carbon in ironmaking. It also positions Meramandali, already India's largest auto-grade steel producer, as a testbed for cleaner blast furnace operations.
