Tata Steel IJmuiden and Ecocem have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop low carbon cement and concrete using steelmaking slags. The project focuses on using Basic Oxygen Furnace and Electric Arc Furnace slags to replace carbon intensive clinker in construction materials. This collaboration aims to create a circular value chain by turning industrial by-products into cementitious binders. By diversifying the materials used in concrete, the companies intend to reduce overall CO2 emissions in the European building and construction sectors.

Using BOF and EAF slag as a clinker replacement is a solid move, but the real hurdle is always the building codes. Contractors wont touch these materials until the regulatory pathways are cleared and the structural certifications are in place.

Exactly. The MoU mentions regulatory pathways for a reason. Until the EU updates procurement rules to favor these specific alternative binders over traditional Portland cement, the market uptake will be slow regardless of the tech.

Interesting that they are focusing on EAF slag. As Tata Steel moves toward more electric arc furnaces for their Green Steel project, the chemistry of the slag changes. I wonder what the actual volume of usable material will be compared to the old blast furnace slag.
