Tanzania's new Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) runs entirely on electricity from the country's renewable grid, anchored by the 2,115 MW Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project. Early operations have prevented an estimated 16,571 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions and displaced 6.2 million litres of imported diesel, according to an impact assessment. Electric traction costs are 58% lower than diesel alternatives, saving the government 9.6 billion Tanzanian shillings in energy overheads while cutting daily CO2e emissions by 37.6 tonnes compared to buses. The SGR carries 4,231 passengers daily across five services, replacing 89 conventional diesel buses. Energy consumption per passenger is 1.92 to 2.85 kWh for electric rail versus 36.99 to 38.27 kWh for buses. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has framed the project as a strategic climate asset aligned with Tanzania's Vision 2050 and Paris Agreement commitments. More than 2.5 million passengers have shifted from road to rail since operations began, reducing highway congestion and diesel exhaust in urban centers like Dar es Salaam. The project offers a replicable model for developing economies: electrify heavy transport using domestic renewable baseload power rather than fossil fuel plants. Public health benefits include reduced respiratory disease from diesel particulate exposure. However, scaling electric mobility nationwide still faces infrastructure and financing gaps, particularly in rural charging networks.
