President Samia Suluhu Hassan endorsed African carbon equity principles in February 2026, but a recent ICAO ruling on Zimbabwean credits shows a gap in international rules. Zimbabwe completed all Article 6 steps including government authorization and corresponding adjustment, yet CORSIA rejected those credits because they moved through a sovereign national registry instead of an approved private standard. This creates a $14 per tonne price gap between sovereign and private credits. Tanzania has one of Africa's largest forest carbon pipelines across 48 million hectares of forest. The country is building its Article 6 authorization process, but developers are now reassessing timelines. The author argues Tanzania should take a coordinated African position at the ICAO Council session in June to push for rule alignment between CORSIA and the Paris Agreement's sovereign pathway.
