Tanzania launches $2.8 billion environmental program to boost carbon markets and clean energy by 2030

Tanzania has announced a five year environmental program worth Sh7 trillion (about $2.8 billion) running from 2026 to 2030. The plan targets ecosystem restoration, clean cooking energy expansion, waste management improvements, and carbon market development. Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi launched the initiative on World Environment Day in Dodoma, linking it directly to the country's Vision 2050 goals. The program aims to plant two billion trees annually, restore five million hectares of degraded land, and increase clean cooking adoption from 28.6 percent in 2025 to over 80 percent by 2032. Officials said carbon trading mechanisms and global environmental funds will help finance the effort, with local governments required to enforce green building permits and recycling infrastructure.
