Tanzania has announced a Sh7 trillion ($2.7 billion) five year environmental programme running from 2026 to 2030. The plan targets planting two billion trees annually, restoring five million hectares of degraded land, and scaling clean cooking adoption from 28.6% to over 80% by 2032. It also aims to strengthen carbon markets as a revenue source and improve waste management through circular economy approaches. The programme was launched by Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi on World Environment Day. It places responsibility on local governments to enforce green space requirements and integrate carbon market opportunities into development plans. The government reports clean cooking access has already grown from 6.9% in 2021 to 28.6% in 2025. Right, and 2 billion trees per year is ambitious. Tree survival rates in restoration projects are often low. Need to see what species and maintenance plans they have.
