The Tanzanian government has committed to implementing stakeholder recommendations to accelerate the rollout of electric vehicle charging stations across the country. Speaking at the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair, Ministry of Energy Director of Policy and Planning Engineer Petro Lyatuu said the proposals, which include ensuring reliable electricity supply and dedicated transformers at charging points, will be folded into national development plans. The move is part of a broader push to cut transport emissions and lower fuel costs for drivers. Alongside EV infrastructure, Tanzania has expanded its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refueling network from just two stations in 2021 to about 19 today, all in Dar es Salaam. Officials say the shift to CNG is already cutting operating costs for ride-hailing drivers and reducing queues. The government plans to keep working with private investors to grow both CNG and EV charging networks as part of its 2030 electricity generation target and clean energy transition.

CNG expansion is interesting but the article does not say where the gas comes from. If it is domestic production that displaces imported petrol, that is a real win for both emissions and trade balance. If it is imported LNG, the math changes.
