Tanker ship captures 78% of CO2 emissions in onboard carbon capture test, stores gas in tanks

Instead of venting all emissions into the air, the ship uses a system of cleaning machines, a liquid that absorbs CO2, pipelines, cooling, and storage tanks. The test ran from February 2025 and was presented by Wartsila and Solvang ASA at an International Maritime Organization seminar in September 2025. The system is not a simple filter. It requires energy to operate and takes up deck space that could be used for other purposes. The captured CO2 is stored in liquid form in large tanks on board until it can be discharged at port. The technology shows that onboard carbon capture is technically possible, but the energy penalty and the need for port infrastructure to handle the stored CO2 remain open questions. The 78% capture rate is a strong result, but scaling it across a fleet will depend on whether the energy cost and space tradeoffs make economic sense for ship operators.
