Tamil Nadu Aims for Early Carbon Neutrality With Green Climate Fund and District Decarbonisation Plans
motorindiaonline.inTamil Nadu is moving ahead on an accelerated path to carbon neutrality, aiming to beat India's 2070 net-zero target. The state has set a 2019 greenhouse gas baseline using IPCC guidelines and is now turning that into a transition pathway. Work is underway on decarbonisation plans for four districts, supported by a new ₹1,000-crore Green Climate Fund with an initial ₹100-crore commitment from the state government. At the CII Tamil Nadu Sustainable Manufacturing Summit 2026, officials and industry leaders focused on moving sustainability from commitments to measurable business value. Speakers highlighted green power savings, circular economy efforts, and the need to integrate sustainability into manufacturing rather than treat it as a separate compliance activity. The fund is expected to support energy transition, circular economy, and recycling projects, with the remaining corpus to be raised from the market.
