Tallgrass CO2 Pipeline Construction Advances in Mills County for Carbon Capture and Sequestration

Construction is progressing on a 5-mile CO2 pipeline in Mills County, Iowa, built by Tallgrass to transport captured carbon dioxide from the SIRE ethanol plant in Council Bluffs to the Trailblazer Pipeline in Nebraska. From there, the CO2 will flow to a sequestration hub in Wyoming for permanent underground storage. The project aims to reduce emissions from ethanol production by capturing and storing carbon underground. Work began in spring 2026 at the SIRE plant and is expected to reach the Missouri River by late summer or early fall. Mills County hired Snyder and Associates to inspect agricultural mitigation and land restoration, with costs reimbursed by Tallgrass. As of early July, over 12,500 linear feet of topsoil had been stripped and stockpiled. The pipeline crosses agricultural and industrial areas, with construction running 10 hours a day, six days a week.
