Tallest tropical trees evolve to pump water efficiently, boosting carbon storage in rainforests

Researchers from Cardiff University and the University of Exeter studied dipterocarp trees in Malaysian Borneo and found that these trees adapt their internal water vessels and leaf physiology to maintain water flow even during drought. The tallest 1% of these trees store more than half of the above ground carbon in forests, making their resilience critical for climate change mitigation. The study measured trees from 7 to 71 meters tall and tracked growth before, during, and after the 2023-2024 El Nino drought. Taller trees compensated by widening water carrying vessels near the ground and adjusting leaf traits to withstand greater water stress. This challenges previous models that assumed tall trees would suffer more during drought, which could change how we estimate forest carbon storage under climate change scenarios. The research team is now expanding the work to Amazonian trees to test if the pattern holds across tropical forests globally.
