Taiwan Railway Corp completed its first companywide greenhouse gas inventory and set a target to cut total emissions by 3 percent by 2028, using 2025 as the baseline. The inventory covers 613 sites and puts emissions at 428,400 tonnes of CO2e. Train operations account for 75.1 percent of that total, while station operations make up 15.6 percent, so the reduction plan focuses mostly on traction energy and facility upgrades. The company is rolling out 11 projects across six areas, including new energy-efficient trains, regenerative braking, LED lighting, air conditioning and chiller replacements, low-carbon shared vehicles, and 73 solar projects on stations and depots. It is also building a cloud platform called SOPHIA to integrate operational and facility data for better energy management. Mobile ticketing has grown from 5.94 percent of users in 2019 to 20.38 percent in 2025, cutting about 341 tonnes of CO2e and saving over 55.36 million Taiwan dollars in printing costs. The 3 percent reduction is a total cut over three years, not an annual rate, and it is a modest first step. Still, the move gives Taiwan Railway a concrete baseline and a data framework it plans to use for a net zero transition by 2050.
