Taiwan president: emissions cuts will decide future orders and industrial competitiveness
taipeitimes.comTaiwan President William Lai said companies that fail to cut emissions could lose orders as international supply chains tighten carbon requirements. Speaking at the Energy Taiwan and Net-Zero Taiwan exhibitions, he said carbon fee revenue would help fund industrial green transitions and technology innovation. Taiwan has completed its first round of carbon fee declarations and payments, putting a price on emissions. The government also plans to invest NT$100 billion (US$3.11 billion) over eight years to help micro, small and medium-sized enterprises with digital and net-zero transitions. Renewable capacity has grown from 4.7 GW in 2016 to 25 GW, with cumulative offshore wind ranked fifth globally. Lai reaffirmed targets to cut emissions 28% by 2030 and 38% by 2035 from 2005 levels, while stressing reliable power is needed as AI raises electricity demand.
