Taiwan develops carbon footprint method for moth orchid seedlings, aims to boost export competitiveness

The Floral Industry Innovation Center built a program module that lets farmers calculate emissions by entering basic production data. A seedling in a standard nursery pot has about 0.4 kg of CO2 equivalent, according to the center. The carbon footprint will be printed on outer packaging, which the ministry says could help Taiwan-grown orchids stand out in export markets where buyers increasingly look for low-carbon products. Power use in protected cultivation facilities is a major emission source, and the module is designed to help growers identify where to cut emissions. The move follows broader trends in agricultural carbon accounting and could influence similar efforts in other specialty crops.
