Taiwan carbon fee to cut 45 million tons annually by 2030, drive NT$1 trillion in supply chain value
taipeitimes.comTaiwan's Ministry of Environment reports that its carbon fee system is driving significant emissions reductions. A total of 402 major emitters have submitted voluntary reduction plans targeting an average of 45.2 million tons of CO2 cuts per year by 2030. Cumulative reductions from 2025 to 2030 are estimated at 114 million tons. Key strategies include fuel switching, process improvements, energy efficiency upgrades, and renewable energy adoption. Electricity savings alone are expected to reach 4.18 billion kWh annually by 2030, roughly equal to the yearly consumption of four semiconductor fabs. The decarbonization push is also generating substantial economic activity. The ministry projects NT$738 billion in investment in mitigation equipment by 2030, along with NT$1.1 trillion in supply chain orders and NT$370.8 billion in added value. These efforts are expected to support demand equivalent to 145,000 full-time jobs. The report underscores that carbon pricing and emissions reduction can deliver both environmental and economic benefits when paired with clear policy signals and industry engagement.
