Swiss Pilot Raphael Domjan Sets Solar-Powered Electric Plane Altitude Record at 9,640 Meters
tvcnews.tvSwiss pilot Raphael Domjan has set a new world altitude record for a solar-powered electric plane, reaching 9,640 meters in a flight from Sion, Switzerland. The World Air Sports Federation (FAI) confirmed the record after verifying flight data from August 2025. The previous certified record for a solar plane was 9,235 meters, set 15 years earlier. The flight lasted five hours and nine minutes. The SolarStratos aircraft is built from carbon fiber, has a 24.8 meter wingspan, and carries 22 square meters of solar panels. It can take off at speeds as low as 50 km/h and cruises at around 80 km/h. The team now aims to make the first crewed solar-powered flight into the stratosphere, which starts at roughly 10,000 to 12,000 meters at Switzerland's latitude. This record is a small but meaningful step for solar aviation. It demonstrates what lightweight materials and high-efficiency solar cells can do in real flight conditions. It does not mean solar planes are ready for commercial travel, but it provides useful data for future electric aircraft development.
