Auckland Council is trialling a Swiss mobile dewatering plant at a stormwater pond in Wairau Valley. The technology processes sediment on site, separating water, sand, and gravel instead of sending the full load to landfill. The council says this could cut the volume of sediment sent to landfill by 60 percent and reduce truck movements and associated carbon emissions. Around 14,000 cubic metres of sediment is removed from Auckland's 650 stormwater ponds each year, with 2.2 million cubic metres expected over the next two decades. The trial is run by Healthy Waters and contractor Glasgow Contractors. If the system proves effective, the recovered sand and gravel could be reused as fill or aggregate, and the silt could be used for topsoil. The Swiss Ambassador visited the Wairau Valley site this week. The council sees this as a lower carbon approach to maintaining the infrastructure that protects Auckland's harbours and waterways.
