A new study from the University of Bristol and University of Southampton suggests that replacing one beef meal per week with UK sourced salmon could reduce food related carbon emissions by 28% by 2050. That is nearly double the 15% reduction expected under current UK dietary trends. Researchers analyzed data from 4,000 UK households and compared five diet scenarios including the NHS Eatwell guide and the EAT Lancet Planetary Health Diet. The study highlights that simple dietary swaps can deliver both health and climate benefits without requiring major lifestyle changes. The 28% reduction equals the carbon footprint of a return flight from Heathrow to Marrakech. Researchers note that domestic fish supply could also support UK protein security amid global trade uncertainties.
