A study from the University of Bristol and the University of Southampton found that replacing one beef steak per week with salmon could reduce food-related carbon emissions by 28% by 2050. That saving is roughly equal to the emissions from a round trip flight between London and Marrakech. The researchers analyzed data from 4,000 UK households and modeled five dietary scenarios, with the simple salmon swap outperforming business as usual trends. The study highlights how small dietary changes can have outsized climate effects. Food systems account for about 20% of UK emissions and 26% globally, with red meat being the largest contributor. The researchers note that the swap is realistic for many consumers and offers both environmental and health benefits, though they acknowledge population wide change would require support for farmers and sustainable seafood production.
