Swansea manufacturer Afon Engineering installs 699-panel rooftop solar array with £250k investment
wales247.co.ukAfon Engineering, a Swansea-based manufacturer of precision components for nuclear, defence, renewables and power generation, has installed a 329 kW rooftop solar system at its Llansamlet facility. The project, costing £250,000, includes a £200,000 loan from the Development Bank of Wales’ Green Business Loan Scheme. The 699-panel array is expected to cut annual carbon emissions by about 60 tonnes and lower energy costs for the energy-intensive operation, with an estimated payback period of four years. The investment follows the company’s acquisition in late 2024, also backed by the Development Bank. Afon employs over 60 people locally. The solar installation is part of a broader push to improve productivity and competitiveness while reducing environmental impact. The Green Business Loan Scheme is designed to help Welsh businesses invest in projects that deliver both commercial and environmental returns. This case shows how targeted finance can support industrial decarbonization without relying on subsidies beyond loan terms.
